31 Days of Parenting Littles: Join

So you're a mom now? Join the club! Or maybe the mommy Bible study or moms and tots group, baby music class, baby gym class, etc? I'm part of a couple moms groups. One moms Bible study, one "hippie" mom group, and one facebook moms group for Christian mothers. Yes, I've joined a few clubs! But just because you join something doesn't mean that you feel like you belong. In so many ways, we feel a bit like misfits as parents. We're "attachment parents" except for...? "Hippie parents" except for..."Christian parents", but... The fact of the matter is that the way we parent tends to connect with people from a lot of different groups, but also offend people in those same groups, because we do such a mix of things. I breastfeed (for much longer than most!), we bedshare, we babywear, we introduce solids via baby-led weaning (table foods), and we don't vaccinate, so we seem to fit with the attachment parenting/hippie crowd, but we are more authoritarian than anyone in that group. However, we are not nearly as authoritarian as most other parents in the moms' Bible study I attend. It can be tough not feeling like you fit in, even as an adult. But fitting in or not, we continually try to do our best by our kids, and we are open to learning and growing and changing as we go.
