31 Days of Parenting Littles: New

This post is part of my 31 Days of 5 Minute Free Writes. See my first post if you haven't heard of 5 minute free writes.

We're third time parents, and it's funny how in the hospital, those were the key words to being able to do things our way without a fight. Mention that we have two older children at home and they were happy to let us do what we wanted with very little intervention. But it's also true that in some ways, everything is still new. You forget how tiny a newborn is, even just a year after you had a baby. I have friends coming up to me all the time, their own babies on their hips, exclaiming over how small and precious my new little one is. And no matter how many children you have, some things are always new. This is our first girl. That's new! But more than that, this is a new little person, with her own personality, preferences, and needs. She is different than our boys were, different than our friend's babies. She is new. And she is unique. And that's how we treat her. We learn how to care for HER. We don't try to make her into one of our other children or assume she'll do everything the same way they did. We treat her like what she is- someone NEW, different, and special. Our family is new because of her. Newly a family of 5. Newly a family with both boys and girls. There are new blessings, new challenges, new methods, new madness- NEW!
